Mark a listing attribute as a filter, then switch the Attributes section on in the theme editor. Shoppers get a section per attribute in the filter sidebar, each value carrying the number of listings behind it.

Prerequisites

Required permissions: Create and edit attributes to mark an attribute as a filter, Edit listings to give listings values, and Edit online store access for the theme editor. All four system roles hold the three.
Pick attributes a shopper would narrow by rather than ones you track internally. A brand, a size, a condition and a room capacity make good filters. A supplier reference and an internal note do not. Decide the format before you create the attribute: the format is fixed once the attribute exists.

The walkthrough

1

Open the listing attributes

Open Settings → Attributes & Tags and select Catalog under Attributes & Attribute Groups. The table lists every listing attribute with an Online store filter column.
2

Create the attribute or open the one you have

Select New attribute, or tick a row and select Edit. Enter a Name, which is the heading shoppers read in the sidebar.
3

Pick a format the store can filter by

Set Type. Every format filters except Formula and Smart field, whose values are computed rather than chosen.Add the options now for a select or a multi-select. Type is fixed after you save, so a different format means a new attribute.
4

Tick Show as filter in online store

Tick the checkbox under Save as global attribute. It appears on listing attributes of a filterable format only.Tick Save as global attribute as well to put the field on every listing without attaching it one by one.
5

Save the attribute

Select Save. The row now reads Yes under Online store filter.
6

Set the order the sections appear in

Drag the attribute rows by their handles. The sidebar lists your filter attributes in this order.
7

Give your listings values

Open a listing’s Attributes tab and fill the field in. A global attribute is already there; otherwise select Add Attribute and pick it.Only the values your listings carry reach the sidebar, so an option nobody uses is never offered.
8

Switch the Attributes section on

Open the theme editor under Sales channels → Online store. Select the Collection page, open Listings grid, and turn on Show Filters under Search, filtering and sorting. Turn on Attributes in the list beneath it.A store that saved its filter settings before 23 October 2026 has the section switched off.
9

Place the section among the others

Drag Attributes by its handle to set where it sits against Collections, Dates, Categories, Price and Stores. A section keeps its place whether it is shown or not.
10

Save the theme editor

Select Save. The filters go live on your store straight away.

How do I know it worked?

  • The attribute’s row reads Yes under Online store filter.
  • Your store’s shop and collection pages carry a section named after the attribute.
  • Each value lists the number of listings behind it, such as Salomon (4).
  • Ticking a value narrows the grid, adds a chip above it and leaves Clear filters beside the chip.

Troubleshooting / common pitfalls

Check three things. Switch Attributes on in the theme editor, mark at least one attribute as a filter, and give a listing on the page a value. A store that saved its filter settings before 23 October 2026 starts with the section off.
An attribute offers the values the listings on the page have, and nothing else. Open a listing that should carry the value and check its Attributes tab. A value whose listings sit outside the collection the shopper is on stays out of that page.
Check the resource and the format. The checkbox shows on listing attributes only, and never on a Formula or a Smart field. A stock item, customer or order attribute does not filter the store.
An attribute lists its first ten values with Show more under them, which reads ten more. Past ten values it also carries a search box that finds a value by its label, key, text or number.
Counts follow every other filter on the page, so ticking a brand changes the counts under condition and price. An attribute’s own counts stay as they were, which keeps the rest of its values pickable.
Counts are held for about a minute, so an edit to a listing or a collection reaches them shortly after you save. Editing the attribute itself clears them at once.
Values ticked within one attribute match any of them, so two brands return both. Values ticked across two attributes match all of them, so a brand and a condition return the listings carrying both. A shopper ticks at most 100 values per attribute.
