# How to set a stock item's purchase price

> Enter what a unit cost you on its General tab, save it, and see it counted as a cost on its Income & Expenses tab.

Set the purchase price on a stock item to record what the unit cost you. Saving it adds a **Purchase price** cost to the unit's **Income & Expenses** tab, so its profitability starts from what you paid. [Stock Item](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/inventory/stock-items.md#the-article-ledger) explains the entries that tab keeps.

## Prerequisites

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Required permissions:**
>
> * **Create and edit stock items** to save the purchase price (`inventory:stock_item_general:manage`).
> * **View income & expenses** for the cost it adds (`inventory:stock_item_cost:view`).
>
> Manager, Admin and Owner hold both. Member holds only the first. See [Users & Roles](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/settings/users-roles.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Have ready before you start:**
>
> * **What the unit cost you**, without taxes. The totals on **Income & Expenses** are read without taxes.
> * **The stock item's name or SKU**, to find it in the table.

## The walkthrough

**1. Open the stock item**

Select **Inventory** in the left sidebar. Search for the item by its name or SKU in the search box above the table, then click its row. The stock item opens on its **General** tab.

**2. Enter the purchase price**

In the details card on the **General** tab, click the field beside **Purchase Price** and enter what the unit cost you. A link icon beside the label means the field shows the SKU's price, and your value replaces it for this stock item only. A bar slides down at the top of the page with **Save changes**.

**3. Save the price**

Click **Save changes** in the bar at the top of the page. The bar closes, and **Purchase Price** keeps your value with no link icon beside it.

**4. Check the cost on Income & Expenses**

Click **Income & Expenses** in the tab row. The table lists a **Cost** row named **Purchase price**, with your amount shown as a negative figure under **Amount**. **Total Costs** at the top includes it.

## How do I know it worked?

* **Purchase Price shows your value** on the **General** tab, with no link icon beside it.
* **A Cost row named Purchase price** is on **Income & Expenses**, and **Total Costs** includes it.
* **Profitability is lower by the same amount.**

## Troubleshooting / common pitfalls

> [accordion] There is no Purchase Price field
>
> Every role you hold hides **Cost figures**, which takes the field off the page. Ask an admin to show it again on the role's **UI Visibility** tab. See [UI visibility](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/admin/visible-areas.md#how-it-works).

> [accordion] Total Costs leaves out the price the SKU set
>
> A price the stock item inherits from its SKU adds no cost row. Enter the price on the stock item and save. See [Stock Item](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/inventory/stock-items.md#the-article-ledger).

> [accordion] Total Costs dropped after you cleared the price
>
> Clearing **Purchase Price** and saving removes the **Purchase price** row rather than setting it to zero. Where the SKU has a price, the field shows it again with the link icon, and it adds no row. See [Stock Item](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/inventory/stock-items.md#the-article-ledger).
