# How to move a stock item to another location

> Record units that moved between locations: add them at the location they reached, then remove them at the location they left.

Record units that moved between your locations as two quantity changes on the stock item: add them at the location they reached, then remove them at the location they left. [Locations](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/admin/locations.md#transfers-between-locations) explains what moves with the units and what stays behind.

## Prerequisites

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Required permissions:**
>
> * **Create and edit stock items** to change a stock item's quantity at a location (`inventory:stock_item_fulfilment:manage`). Every built-in role holds it.
>
> See [Users & Roles](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/settings/users-roles.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Have ready before you start:**
>
> * **The number of units that moved**, the location they left and the location they reached.
> * **Orders at the old location covered.** An order or reservation there that still needs the units you remove is left without one. Swap such orders onto another stock item first. See [Swap a stock item](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/guides/orders/swap-a-stock-item.md).

## The walkthrough

**1. Choose all locations**

Click the location selector in the top-left corner of the admin and choose **All locations**. The quantity dialog offers a choice of location only while more than one location is chosen.

**2. Open the stock item**

Open **Inventory → Stock items** and click the stock item's row. It opens on its **General** tab. The card on the right is headed **All locations** and shows **Stock balance** with **Edit** beside it.

**3. Open the quantity dialog**

Click **Edit** beside **Stock balance**. The **Edit Item quantity** dialog opens. On the left, **"Set stock item quantity for"** carries a location field and the quantity. On the right, **Old quantity**, **New quantity** and **Quantity change** follow what you set.

**4. Add the units at the new location**

Pick the location the units reached in the location field. Raise the quantity beside it by the number of units that moved, and check **Quantity change**. Click **Save**. The dialog closes and **Stock balance** rises by that number.

**5. Pick the old location**

Click **Edit** beside **Stock balance** again, and pick the location the units left in the location field. **Old quantity** shows the units recorded there.

**6. Remove the units at the old location**

Lower the quantity by the same number. If **Availability conflicts** appears at the top of the dialog, click **Cancel**: the change would leave the orders and reservations it counts without a unit. Otherwise click **Save**. **Stock balance** is back where it started.

## How do I know it worked?

* **Stock balance under All locations is unchanged** from before you started.
* **The new location counts the moved units** when you choose it in the location selector, in **Quantity** and on the stock item's card. The old location no longer counts them.
* **Current location names the new location** for the stock item under **All locations**.

## Troubleshooting / common pitfalls

> [accordion] Availability conflicts appears when you lower the quantity
>
> Orders or reservations at the old location still need those units. Click **Cancel**, swap the orders onto another stock item, then remove the units. See [Locations](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/admin/locations.md#transfers-between-locations).

> [accordion] The dialog warns This item will become untracked
>
> You are adding more than one unit to a location that held one or none, which makes this stock item a pool. On a stock item already counted as a pool, click **Save anyway**. See [Inventory tracking](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/inventory/inventory-tracking.md).

> [accordion] The dialog has no location field
>
> Only one location is chosen in the location selector. Choose **All locations** and open the dialog again. See [Locations](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/admin/locations.md#stock-items-and-locations).
