# How to grade a stock item

> Set a unit's grade in its grade attribute, on the stock item's Attributes tab, when it comes in or after work changes what it is worth.

Grade a stock item when it comes in, or again after work changes what it is worth. The grade goes into an attribute on the unit itself, so two units of one SKU can carry different grades. [Attributes](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/admin/attributes.md#faqs) explains why a grade belongs in an attribute rather than the **Condition** field.

## Prerequisites

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Required permissions:** **"Create and edit stock items"** (`inventory:stock_item_attributes:manage`). Every built-in role holds it, Member included. See [Users & Roles](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/settings/users-roles.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Have ready before you start:**
>
> * **A grade attribute** on the inventory resource, of type **Select**, with your grades as its options. See [Add a stock item attribute](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/guides/inventory/add-a-stock-item-attribute.md).
> * **The unit's grade**, decided against the unit in front of you rather than its SKU.

## The walkthrough

**1. Open the stock item**

Open **Inventory → Stock items** and click the item's row. Check the location selector in the top-left corner first if you have more than one location, because the table lists only that location's stock. The item opens on its **General** tab.

**2. Open the Attributes tab**

Click **Attributes** in the item's tab row. The tab shows the item's attributes in cards: **Details** for attributes with no group, and one card per attribute group. If the grade already shows in its card, go to the last step.

**3. Open Add attributes**

Click **Add Attribute** at the top of the card the grade belongs in: its attribute group's card, or **Details** when it has no group. The **Add attributes** panel opens on the right with one empty row.

**4. Pick the grade and its value**

In **Pick an attribute**, choose your grade attribute. Choose the unit's grade in the field that appears beside it. Click **Add 1 attribute** at the bottom of the panel. The panel closes, and the card lists the grade with its value, saved at once.

**5. Change a grade the item already carries**

Skip this step if you added the grade in the step before. Choose the new grade in the grade's field on its card. A bar opens across the top of the page: click **Save changes** in it to keep the new grade.

## How do I know it worked?

* **The grade shows on the item's Attributes tab**, with the value you chose, after you reload the page.
* **Filtering the Stock items table by the grade finds the item.** Show the attribute's column first: attribute columns are hidden by default.

## Troubleshooting / common pitfalls

> [accordion] The grade is not offered in Pick an attribute
>
> The panel leaves out attributes the item already carries, and on a group's card it offers only that group's attributes. Look for the grade on the item's cards first, or open the panel from **Details**, which offers every inventory attribute. See [Stock Item - Attributes](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/inventory/stock-items/attributes.md).

> [accordion] The grade you need is not in the list
>
> A **Select** attribute offers only its options. Add the grade as an option to the attribute under **Settings → Attributes & Tags → Inventory**. See [Attributes](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/admin/attributes.md#faqs).

> [accordion] A listing does not draw the graded unit
>
> The listing's rule has to match on the grade attribute, and the unit has to be Active. See [Attributes](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/admin/attributes.md#faqs) for what a rule can match on, and [Stock Item Status](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/inventory/stock-item-status.md) for which units count.
