# How to delete a stock item

> Remove an archived stock item for good from Settings → Archived assets, which also frees its codes for another stock item.

Delete an archived stock item you will not need again. It is no longer shown anywhere in the admin, and its codes are free to give to another stock item. Deleting cannot be undone from the admin. ## Prerequisites

> **Required permissions:**
>
> * **Delete stock items** to delete a stock item (`inventory:stock_item:delete`). Every built-in role holds it.
>

> **Have ready before you start:**

> * **The stock item archived.** Only an archived stock item can be deleted. See [Archive stock items](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/guides/inventory/archive-stock-items.md).
> * **The stock item's name or code**, to find it among the archived ones.

## The walkthrough

**1. Open Archived assets**

With more than one location, choose **All locations** in the location selector in the top-left corner first, because the archived stock items follow it. Then open **Settings → Archived assets**. The page lists every kind of record you can archive, in cards grouped by area.

**2. Open the archived stock items**

Click **Stock items** under **Inventory**. A full-screen view opens with a table of archived stock items.

**3. Select the stock item**

Enter its name or code in **"Search item name or SKU"**, then select the checkbox at the start of its row. **Edit**, **Unarchive** and **Delete** show above the table, with **Delete** in red. Clicking the row itself opens the stock item instead.

**4. Choose Delete**

Click **Delete** above the table. The **Delete item** dialog opens and reads "This action cannot be undone."

**5. Delete the stock item**

Click **Delete** in the dialog. The dialog closes, and the stock item is gone from the table.

## How do I know it worked?

* **The stock item is gone from the archived stock items**, and no stock item list in the admin shows it.
* **Its codes are free.** You can give them to another stock item.
