# How to check stock at a location

> Choose a location in the location selector and read how many units of each stock item sit there, and how many of them are free.

> [card] [Open in TWICE Admin](https://admin.twicecommerce.com/inventory/stock-items)
>
> inventory/stock-items

Read what one location holds: the units of each stock item there, and how many of them are free or committed. [Locations](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/admin/locations.md#stock-items-and-locations) explains what the location selector counts and what it leaves out.

## Prerequisites

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Required permissions:** **View stock items** to read the stock items table and a stock item's page (`inventory:stock_item:view`). Every built-in role holds it. See [Users & Roles](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/settings/users-roles.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Have ready before you start:**
>
> * **More than one active location.** The location selector shows only on an account with more than one. With one, every inventory screen already counts that location.

## The walkthrough

**1. Choose the location**

Click the location selector in the top-left corner of the admin. A panel opens on the left, listing **All locations** first and then each of your locations. Click the location you want to check. The panel closes and the selector shows its name.

**2. Open the stock items table**

Open **Inventory → Stock items**. The table lists only the stock items with units at the location you chose.

**3. Read the quantities**

Read **Quantity** for the units of each stock item at this location. **Free Stock** and **Committed Stock** split those units into free and committed. If a column is hidden, show it from the table's column settings.

**4. Open a stock item**

Click a stock item's row. It opens on its **General** tab. The card on the right is headed with the location's name and shows **Stock balance**, **Available** and **Committed** at this location. Pick a date in the card's date field to read them for another day.

**5. Compare with every location**

Open the location selector again and choose **All locations**. The table now lists stock at every location, **Quantity** counts all of them, and **Current location** names where each stock item's units are.

## How do I know it worked?

* **The location selector shows the location's name**, and the table lists only stock items with units there.
* **Quantity and Stock balance agree** while the same location is chosen: the table and the stock item count the same units.
* **Under All locations, Current location names the location you checked** for every stock item you saw there.

## Troubleshooting / common pitfalls

> [accordion] There is no location selector
>
> The account has one active location, so every inventory screen already counts it. See [Locations](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/admin/locations.md#stock-items-and-locations).

> [accordion] A stock item you know about is missing from the table
>
> Its units are at another location. Choose **All locations** and look again. See [Locations](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/admin/locations.md#stock-items-and-locations).

> [accordion] The stock is here, but a customer cannot order it here
>
> Stock is one of several checks. The listing must also be sold at the location, and the location must offer a way to fulfil it. See [Listing Availability](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/catalog/availability.md#eligibility-vs-availability).
