Attach a service report, an invoice or a completed inspection checklist to the unit it belongs to, so the unit's own record carries what was done to it when you resell it, claim on a warranty or look back after an incident. [Stock item documents](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/inventory/stock-items/documents.md) lists what else the tab does with a file.

## Prerequisites

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Required permissions:**
>
> * **Create and edit stock items** (`inventory:stock_item_documents:create`) to attach a file. Every built-in role holds it, Member included. See [Users & Roles](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/settings/users-roles.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Have ready before you start:**
>
> * **The file**, as an image, a video or a PDF. Scan a paper checklist to PDF first.
> * **A line on what the file records**, such as the work done and the date.

## The walkthrough

**1. Open the unit**

Select **Inventory** in the left sidebar, then **Stock items**, and click the unit's row in the table. The stock item's page opens, with its tabs under its name.

**2. Open the Documents tab**

Click **Documents** in the row of tabs. The **Documents** card lists the files already on the unit, with an **Add** button at its top right.

**3. Choose Upload**

Click **Add** and choose **Upload** in the menu that opens. The **Manage media** dialog opens on **Upload files**, with a drop area in the middle.

**4. Add the file**

Drag the file onto the drop area, or click the link inside it and pick the file from your computer. The file shows as a tile in the drop area.

**5. Upload the file**

Click **Upload files** at the bottom right of the dialog. When the upload finishes, the dialog switches to **Browse files** and lists the selected files, the new one ticked.

**6. Save the selection**

Leave every file ticked, and click **Save selected** at the bottom right. Its count includes the files already on the unit, and a file you untick comes off the unit. The dialog closes, and the new file is a row in the **Documents** card, dated today under **Added**.

**7. Open Add comment**

Click the three-dot button at the right end of the file's row, and choose **Add comment** in the menu. The **Add comment** dialog opens.

**8. Write what the file records**

Enter a line in **Comment**, such as the work done and its date, and click **Add**. The dialog closes, and the line shows under **Internal comment** in the file's row.

## How do I know it worked?

* **The file is a row in the Documents card**, with today's date under **Added** and your line under **Internal comment**.
* **Clicking the row opens the file** in a new browser tab.

## Troubleshooting / common pitfalls

> [accordion] A file you did not attach is on the tab, and its menu has no Add comment
>
> The file belongs to the unit's SKU, and every unit of that SKU shows it. Rename it or comment on it from the SKU's **Documents** tab. See [Stock item documents](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/inventory/stock-items/documents.md).
