# Compare category tree displays

> Every way a category tree can reach a shopper, in the shop sidebar, in the header and on a phone, in one place.

Pick a sidebar style in **Display** under **Category trees** on the **Collection page** of the theme editor, and a header menu in **Type** under **Shop link**. The two are set apart from each other, so a store can run a mega menu in the header and a checkbox tree in the sidebar at the same time.

Click through the tabs to see what each one puts in front of a shopper. The sidebar shots are all the same page, the **Ski & Snowboard Rentals** group, so only the setting changes between them. The store has two trees: **Shop by category**, holding **Bike Rentals**, **Ski & Snowboard Rentals**, **Used Gear** and **Shop**, and **Pre-owned**.

> Every tree in full, opened down to the page the shopper is on and folded everywhere else. Pick it for trees short enough to read in one go, with a handful of groups per level.

> One level at a time, with a link back up. Pick it when you want one choice per screen, such as an activity first and a type second.

> [tab] Checkbox tree

> A filter rather than a menu: ticking a group adds its listings to the grid the shopper is already looking at. Pick it when shoppers compare across groups, such as two activities at once.

A menu style sits in its own block at the top of the sidebar. **Checkbox tree** sits among the filters instead, in a section headed **Browse**. See [Category tree styles in the shop sidebar](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/catalog/category-tree-sidebar-styles.md) for what each style does at every position in a tree.

## Choose a header menu

> [tab] Mega menu
>
> ![The storefront home with the Shop mega menu open, a column per tree and their first-level groups beneath](https://mintcdn.com/twicecommerce/h24c8N1YWWPtPKa2/images/category-tree-compare-mega-menu.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=h24c8N1YWWPtPKa2\&q=85\&s=5fab688892baef3b4f8a9dccec443891)
>
> A panel across the header with one column per tree, capped by **Links per column**. Pick it when the header is the main way into your catalog and each tree has few enough first-level groups to read at a glance.

> [tab] Dropdown
>
> ![The storefront home with the Shop dropdown open, listing the two tree names](https://mintcdn.com/twicecommerce/h24c8N1YWWPtPKa2/images/category-tree-compare-dropdown.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=h24c8N1YWWPtPKa2\&q=85\&s=21729a7bb8fe1b087bbe873f678bb076)
>
> A short list of the tree names, each opening its tree's page. Pick it when you have several trees and want the header to stay compact.

> [tab] Link only
>
> **Link only** opens nothing. **Shop** is a plain link, as in a store without trees, and the sidebar carries the browsing on its own.
>
> Pick it when the sidebar is where you want shoppers to navigate.

> [tab] Navigation item
>
> ![A navigation item named Activities with its two-level panel open, with Winter heading a column and Skis, Boots and Poles highlighted beneath it](https://mintcdn.com/twicecommerce/vjv-VysjtHQP_9_A/images/storefront-header-nav-item-two-levels.webp?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=vjv-VysjtHQP_9_A\&q=85\&s=3591f65656122e0b878d498e902b5d9f)
>
> A tree as its own header item, named in **Label**, with **Dropdown** set to **No dropdown**, **One level** or **Two levels**. Use separate items for trees shoppers think of separately.

The header picks its own trees, apart from the ones the sidebar shows. See [Category trees in the header](https://www.twicecommerce.com/docs/concepts/catalog/category-trees-in-the-header.md) for where each link leads and how the menus take keyboard input.

On a phone the sidebar moves into the **Filter and sort** drawer and the header items into a drawer behind the menu icon. Both detail pages below show what that looks like.
